Why Men Should Moisturise Their Skin

Why Men Should Moisturise Their Skin

The modern man takes pride in his appearance. He knows that ‘looking the part’ requires some leg work and impeccable skin doesn’t just happen naturally.

Gone are the days of splashing your face with water before leaving the house. Men need a consistent skincare routine to look and feel their best – and that includes moisturising.

Why Should Men Moisturise?

When hearing the phrase skincare routine, many men will picture countless products littered around the basin. It doesn’t need to be that complicated.

If you’re embarking on your skincare journey for the first time, the two crucial steps that you need to worry about are cleansing and moisturising – everything else is a bonus.

While the purpose of cleansing is pretty obvious, you may be wondering ‘what does moisturiser do?’. Let us explain the benefits of using a men’s moisturiser

1. It Prevents Dry Skin

There are many potential causes of dry skin, including cold weather. The air is less humid, so the skin’s moisture evaporates at a quicker rate. Going from the bitter cold to warm indoors shocks and irritates your skin, so it’s common to develop dry skin in winter.

Other factors that lead to dry skin on the face are not drinking enough water, consuming a lot of alcohol – which is a diuretic – and taking hot showers.

Moisturising will not only hydrate skin – it nourishes and strengthens the skin’s lipid barrier, the protective layer of natural oils. This prevents the moisture in skin from evaporating quickly, helping to minimise irritation and keep dry skin at bay.

DB Tip: Don’t know what your skin type is? When you next take a shower, refrain from cleansing or moisturising your face. 10 minutes after you dry off, if your skin feels tight and tough, you most likely have dry skin.

2. It Helps to Balance Oil Production

When skin is dry, pores produce more sebum – the natural oil which protects your skin – to compensate for the lack of moisture. The excess sebum can clog up your pores, which can lead to breakouts and blemishes. Using a men’s moisturising face cream helps to keep the skin hydrated, and sebum production at an optimal level.

Those with an oily skin type have sebaceous glands that naturally produce excess sebum. If you have oily skin, don’t be tempted to let your skin dry out. This will only make you more prone to inflammation, dull skin, and premature aging. You will still need to use moisturisers to keep your skin hydrated and your lipid barrier protected.

3. It Helps to Slow Down the Signs of Ageing

As we age, skin naturally loses its elasticity – the ability to stretch and snap back into place – and this is why we develop fine lines and wrinkles

Reasons for this include a slowdown in the production of collagen (the protein responsible for healthy looking skin), and oxidative stress, which occurs when the skin is exposed to free radicals – unstable atoms in the atmosphere, resulting from pollutants such as smoking, UV exposure and air pollution.

The good news is that men’s face creams can improve skin’s elasticity. Some moisturisers even include antioxidants such as Vitamin E, which help to fight off free radicals and slow down the skin’s ageing process.
